Alex Landi, the actor portraying Dr. Nico Kim in the popular series Grey's Anatomy, has been announced to return in the upcoming Season 20 airing on March 14. Landi, who portrays the first LGBTQ+ character in the series, was absent in the previous season.
Since his debut in Season 15, the character Nico Kim has received numerous accolades. He is the first gay doctor in the series since Sandra Oh left the show in 2014. Landi refers to his character as a historic breakthrough in the storyline of a gay male doctor's romance.
Landi argues that actors should be able to portray characters of any sexual orientation, regardless of their personal identity. According to him, casting decisions should be based on who is the "best" fit for the role.
"As an actor, I want to do the best job I can in any role, regardless of my own personal sexuality or the character's. I just want to do this role proud for LGBT+ and the Asian communities," - Landi said, as quoted on attitude.co.uk
Landi expresses his hope to empower the character of Dr. Nico Kim to overcome LGBTQ+ and Asian stereotypes. He notes that Grey's Anatomy provides diversity representation by featuring both Asian and LGBTQ+ elements in one role.
"I want to take these two categories and make everyone look strong. I want to get rid of that stereotype and give them a different look on the LGBTQ community. I just hope I'm making everyone proud." - Landi said, as quoted on Thepinknews.com
Alex Landi portrays Dr. Nico Kim, the first gay male surgeon in the history of Grey's Anatomy. Dr. Nico Kim appeared in Season 15, bringing his romantic storyline with Dr. Levi Schmitt, played by Jake Borelli.
Landi indicates that casting choices can go "both ways," citing Jake Borelli initially being cast as a straight doctor before his character came out as gay mid-season.
Landi describes his experience portraying LGBTQ+ and Asian characters as something special due to the underrepresentation of both groups in the entertainment industry. He hopes to eliminate stereotypes and offer a different perspective on the LGBTQ+ community.
Alex Landi has an Italian-Korean background and initially aspired to be a tennis player before becoming interested in acting. Before Grey's Anatomy, Landi trained at the Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute in New York and traveled to China to train in martial arts.
Thus, Alex Landi is not only returning as Dr. Nico Kim in Season 20 of Grey's Anatomy but also sharing his views on LGBTQ+ and Asian representation in the entertainment industry.
The latest season is dubbed the "season of love" by cast members, with Dr. Nico Kim expected to experience romantic developments in his storyline.
Grey's Anatomy Season 20 will premiere on March 14 on ABC in the US and Australia, and on Disney+ in the UK. This season will also mark the first time that the character Dr. Meredith Grey, played by Ellen Pompeo, won't be as prominently featured in the show.
