In an official announcement, it has been confirmed that the drama adaptation of the webtoon "I, A Gangster, Became a High Schooler" will proceed as planned and is scheduled for release in 2023. The drama will consist of 8 episodes and will exclusively air on the TVING platform. The production of this drama will be helmed by Number 3 Pictures, previously involved in the production of the drama "Unintentional Love Story." Meanwhile, the director is Lee Seongtaek, who is also known for directing the Korean BL drama "Love Class."
Initially, there were reports that the drama adaptation would eliminate all Boys' Love (BL) elements from the original story. After it was revealed that Yoon Chan Young (known from the dramas "All Of Us Are Dead," "Delivery Man," and "Nobody Knows") and Bong Jae Hyun from the K-Pop group Golden Child) would be the leads in the drama, this surprised many fans, especially considering the core narrative involving the protagonist, Song Yi Heon, facing bullying due to his gay orientation. This incident triggers a series of significant events in the storyline. However, the producers later clarified that the story would be presented without BL elements.
Despite circulating rumors that the drama was cancelled due to financial issues, the production team has refuted these claims. They have reaffirmed that the production plan is proceeding as scheduled, and the drama will air as previously announced.
The news of this "cancellation" has generated various reactions on social media. Nevertheless, some remind us that it is advisable not to derive joy or jump to conclusions based on such negative news. The impact could be felt by numerous stakeholders involved in the project. Regardless of the altered narrative direction, hopes for success are still pinned on this production, particularly considering that the same production company is also working on a spin-off of "Unintentional Love Story."
